Shropshire Union Canal

The Shropshire Union Canal runs for 66 1/2 miles and passes through 47 locks. Beginning at the Manchester Ship Canal and traveling, mostly, in a southerly direction it meets the Staffordshire & Worcester Canal at Autherly Junction. The Middlewich Branch of the canal, also know as the new cut, makes it's 10 mile journey from Barbridge Junction to Middlewich where it meets the Trent & Mersey Canal. The Shropshire Union Canal accommodates wide beam traffic on it's northern most section from Ellesmereport to Nantwich and on the Middlewich Branch, allowing boats as wide as 9 feet. On the it's southern section, from Nantwich to Autherley the canal is narrow, permitting boats with beams up to 7 feet wide to pass.
